A native of Sonoma, California, Commander Joshua Overn graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and earned his commission through the University of Idaho NROTC unit. After designation as a Naval Aviator, Commander Overn operationally flew the H-60F/H Seahawk, Lynx MK-3/8, and MH-60S helicopters.
At sea, Commander Overn served with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron ELEVEN (HS-11), deployment aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in 5th Fleet and aboard USS Carl Vinson for Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief in support of earthquake relief in Haiti. He earned his British wings and deployed to JIATF-S with Her Majesty’s Royal Navy onboard HMS Argyll while assigned to 815 Naval Air Squadron, served onboard the USS Makin Island (LHD-8) with Amphibious Squadron 5 as the Force Protection Officer, and deployed to 6th Fleet with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO EIGHT (HSC-28) in support of 6th Fleet logistics. While assigned to these commands, Commander Overn participated in Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, UNIFIED RESPONSE, MARTILLO, and YUKON BOULDER.
Shore tours include attending Naval Postgraduate School earning a Masters of Science degree in Strategic Studies and serving for Commander, Naval Air Forces Atlantic as the Expeditionary Helicopter Readiness Officer.
Commander Overn’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Gold Star), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with Gold Stars), Humanitarian Service Medal, and Battle “E” as well as various campaign and unit service awards.
