Navy improving barracks in Northwest region

The Navy is working to improve the quality of barracks within the Navy’s unaccompanied housing (UH) program. These include performing near-term fixes as well as making long-term investments identified through the Secretary of War’s Barracks Task Force initiative.
The Navy is working to improve the quality of barracks within the Navy’s unaccompanied housing (UH) program. These include performing near-term fixes as well as making long-term investments identified through the Secretary of War’s Barracks Task Force initiative.

There are five barracks improvement projects at Northwest Navy installations in #washingtonstate – two at Naval Base Kitsap, two at NAS Whidbey Island, and one at Naval Station Everett. Work includes painting, floor refurbishment, alarm system replacement, repairing water damage and leaks, and upgrading electrical and plumbing systems.

These Navy UH program investments utilize Barracks Task Force funding and aim to enhance Sailors’ quality of service which will help improve their readiness by providing safe, comfortable, and clean housing.

Project summaries are as follows:

⚓️ Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton:  Repair fire and water damage in barracks Building 885. This includes removal of furniture and complete refurbishment on the entire building. The contract for this work was awarded in November 2025 for approximately $12.1 million. Estimated completion is May 2026.

⚓️ Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor:  Repair and upgrade electrical and plumbing systems for dishwasher and garbage disposals in two barracks buildings. The contract for this work was awarded in December 2025 for approximately $87,000.

⚓️ Naval Station Everett:  Repair leaks and water damage and replace exterior siding and windows in barracks Building 2028. The Navy is currently developing the work package for this project. This work has not yet been contracted out.

⚓️ NAS Whidbey Island: Refurbish flooring and paint the interior of barracks Building 337. The Navy is currently developing the work package for this project. This work has not yet been contracted out.

⚓️ NAS Whidbey Island:  Replace fire alarm systems in barracks Buildings 378 and 379. The Navy is currently developing the work package for this project. This work has not yet been contracted out.

Though funded separately, NAS Whidbey Island began a phased barracks special renovation project in January 2023, with completion anticipated in February 2026. The $88 million project includes repairs, reconfiguration and upgrades to the facilities mechanical and electrical systems, roofing, structural components.  Quality-of-life amenity improvements include five new common area kitchens, six additional laundry rooms, and a NEXCOM Micro Mart.

Navy Region Northwest is one of the regions that received Barracks Task Force funding to perform infrastructure improvements. The Navy received approximately $375 million for UH program investments across the Navy shore enterprise which is being managed by Commander, Navy Installations Command.
