Small Arms Range

The Small Arms Range at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, is used for basic small arms qualifications of Sailors, security, and law enforcement agencies.

Types of small arms qualification:

Marksmanship Course is available for all Navy small arms, including 9mm, .38 caliber, .40 caliber, and .45 caliber pistol, 12 gauge shotgun, and 5.56 mm rifle.

Live Fire Schedule:

Small arms live is likely to occur at any time from 7:00 a.m.– 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Evenings and Weekend live fire to be posted on this website when scheduled.

Small Arms Range Danger Zone:

The NAS Whidbey Island Surface Danger Zone (SDZ) is defined by the area bounded by the following positions:

  • Latitude 48°19′20″ N Longitude 122°42′6.92″ W
  • Latitude 48°17′41″ N Longitude 122°43′35″ W
  • Latitude 48°17′23″ N Longitude 122°45′14″ W
  • Latitude 48°20′00″ N Longitude 122°44′00″ W


Warnings of Live Fire:

Prior to and during live fire at the small arms range, warnings will be indicated by:

When live firing is about to be undertaken or is in progress during daylight hours, two (2) large red warning flags will be displayed at the top of the flag poles on the western beach line of the small arms range, so as to be clearly visible from all points of entry into the danger zone.

When live firing is about to be undertaken or is in progress during periods of darkness, two (2) red flashing warning lights will be displayed at the top of the flag poles on the western beach line.

Prior to conducting live firing, Navy personnel will visually scan the danger zone to ensure that no vessels or individuals are located within it.

The danger zone will be open to fishing and general navigation when no weapons firing is scheduled, which will be indicated by the absence of any warning flags or flashing lights on land.
