Kratom – Added to the Navy’s Prohibited Substances List
Any substance containing the drug commonly known as Kratom, is now on the Navy’s
prohibited use list.
While the active ingredients (mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine) in Kratom are derived from an indigenous Southeast Asian tree, they often synthesized or concentrated in laboratories. Effective immediately, Sailors and Marines are prohibited from engaging in the use, possession, distribution, and/or manufacture of any substance, product, compound or item containing, or derived from, kratom, including but not limited to mitragynine or 7-hydroxymitragynine. Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, have opioid and stimulant effects and may be sold in the form of leaves, capsules, gummies, edibles, shots, vapes, and other products.
Kratom, mitragynine, and 7-hydroxymitragynine use poses significant health risks including seizures, tachycardia, hepatotoxicity, hypertension, and death. Several countries and states have classified kratom as a controlled substance due to its high potential for misuse.
This restriction applies to products that are naturally derived, semi-synthetic or synthetic, regardless of the substance’s concentration, claimed or actual, and regardless of whether
such product may lawfully be bought, sold, or used under civilian law. Use means to inject, ingest, inhale, absorb topical applications or otherwise introduce into the human body.
Additionally, ALL hemp products are still illegal for Sailors and Marines to use. The use of products containing, made, or derived from hemp, including CBD, may interfere with the Department of the Navy’s Drug Detection and Deterrence Program and result in the reporting of unlawful levels of THC in Sailors and Marines.
Substance misuse by members of the Armed Forces is incompatible with military standards of good order, discipline, performance, and operational readiness.
Service Members who fail to comply with this ALNAV are in violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), Article 92, Failure to Obey a Lawful General Order, and any other UCMJ articles that may apply. Violations may result in administrative and/or disciplinary action.
A list of other controlled substances that are prohibited for use by active duty servicmembers is available here -

Musicians Wanted
NASWI has two community music groups located close to the base: the SeaNotes Big Band and the All-Island Community Band.

Both groups are always looking for musicians!
There is also a new group being formed in Oak Harbor called the Whidbey Chamber Orchestra. They really need more string players!
