New Speed Limits in Effect South of Oak Harbor

Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews will replace
the existing speed limit signs with new signs. The permanent speed
reductions affect SR 20 between Penn Cove and Southwest Barlow Street in Oak
Harbor.

The new speed limits will be:

  * 45 mph between mileposts 24.95 and 30.26 – down from the current 50 mph
speed limit.
  * 35 mph between mileposts 30.26 and 30.77 – down from the current 50 mph
and 40 mph speed limits in the area.
  * 30 mph between mileposts 30.77 and 31.29 – down from the current 40 mph
speed limit.

New speed limit signs are scheduled to be posted the week of Monday, May 11.
The new speed limits are enforceable as soon as the signs are installed.

The speed reductions will better match current driving speeds, traffic
volumes and the design of the road and nearby areas. WSDOT worked closely
with the city of Oak Harbor on speed limit changes within city limits.
Changes south of Oak Harbor city limits were initiated after WSDOT received
questions from community members and reviewed traffic patterns in the area.

People traveling through the area can do their part to improve safety by
following the speed limit, obeying posted signs, and staying focused and
sober while driving.

Outdoor Recreation & Camping Fire Safety Tips

Campfire Safety

  • Build fires only in designated rings or pits
  • Keep a 10-foot clear zone around the fire – no dry grass, plants, or gear
  • Maintain constant supervision; never leave a fire unattended.
  • Fully extinguish the fire before going to bed.

Portable Stove and Grill Safety

  • Use stoves and grills at least 10 feet from tents, vehicles, and structures.
  • Check fuel lines and canisters for leaks before use.
  • Never refuel a hot stove; allow full cooling first.
  • Dispose of charcoal in metal containers only.

Wildland awareness

  • Know local burn bans and fire danger levels before heading out.
  • Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass – hot exhaust can ignite vegetation.
  • Keep a shovel, bucket of water, or extinguisher nearby.

RV, Trailer & Boating Fire Safety

  • Test Smoke/CO alarms before trips.
  • Store propane cylinders upright and secured.
  • Inspect electrical cords for damage before plugging into shore power.

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE

•           Lock and Secure: Lock all doors and windows, including the garage, even when at home.
•           Security Systems: Utilize portable, non-permanent security systems (e.g., SimpliSafe) that do not require drilling or wiring
•           Lighting: Ensure exterior lights work; install motion-activated lights.
•           Mail Security: Shred documents showing name or rank; remove names from mailboxes.
•           Vacant Home Care: Arrange for lawn care during deployments/Vacations to avoid the appearance of a vacant home.

STAY SAFE OUT THERE!

•           As the weather warms up, it’s time to be extra mindful of the children and cyclists sharing our streets. Here is your quick guide to a safer summer on the road:
•           DRIVE SOBER: Always designate a driver or use a rideshare service; even one drink can impair your judgment and reaction time.
•           PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD: Put the phone away and eliminate distractions to ensure your eyes—and your focus—stay on the path ahead.
•           OBEY SPEED LIMITS: Follow posted signs strictly, as lower speeds are essential for reacting to unpredictable movements in residential areas.
•           SHARE THE ROAD RESPONSIBLY: Give cyclists at least three feet of space when passing and always double-check your blind spots.
•           BE AWARE OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION: Slow down in work zones and stay alert for flaggers, as traffic patterns can change daily during the summer.
•           TALK TO TEEN DRIVERS: Discuss the specific risks of summer driving with your teens, emphasizing the importance of seatbelts and limiting passengers.
•           IT’S ANONYMOUS: NCIS tip line, reward up to $1,000 for information leading to felony arrest, recovery of drugs or stolen property.
•           TEXT: 274637 (CRIMES)

  • Strengthen their professional development and leadership skills.
  • Represent the Navy with distinction and honor.
  • Team Members who participate in 30 services will receive a Navy Achievement Medal.

Sailors who are interested in learning more can attend the weekly training event held in Building 385, the base headquarters building, on Wednesday at 1000. The training is held in the building’s basement. Please ask the quarterdeck watch for directions if you are unsure of whether to go.
