Summer Projects – Fire & Life Safety Tips
Key Safety Tips
- Inspect cords before use – Look for cracks, exposed wiring, or heat damage. Replace damaged cords immediately.
- Avoid daisy-chaining – plug tools directly into outlets.
- Use GFCI outlets outdoors – prevent shock hazards when working in wet or damp areas.
- Charge Lithium-ion batteries safely – use the manufacturer’s charger, avoid overnight charging, and stop using batteries that swell or smell sweet/chemical.
- Keep tools cool – let motors rest during long jobs and store tools out of direct sunlight.
- Fuel yard equipment safely – shut off and cool engines before refueling and store gasoline in approved containers only.
Family Housing & Barracks Residents
- Use only UL-listed power strips – no cheap imports or unlisted devices.
- Never run cords under rugs – Hidden cords overheat and ignite flooring.
- Store tools properly – keep batteries away from flammables and avoid stacking tools where vents can be blocked.
Duty Sections & Work Centers
- Check tool condition before each shift
- Use proper PPE – Gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection.
- Report damaged equipment immediately – remove from service

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE
• Lock and Secure: Lock all doors and windows, including the garage, even when at home.
• Security Systems: Utilize portable, non-permanent security systems (e.g., SimpliSafe) that do not require drilling or wiring
• Lighting: Ensure exterior lights work; install motion-activated lights.
• Mail Security: Shred documents showing name or rank; remove names from mailboxes.
• Vacant Home Care: Arrange for lawn care during deployments/Vacations to avoid the appearance of a vacant home.
STAY SAFE OUT THERE!
• As the weather warms up, it’s time to be extra mindful of the children and cyclists sharing our streets. Here is your quick guide to a safer summer on the road:
• DRIVE SOBER: Always designate a driver or use a rideshare service; even one drink can impair your judgment and reaction time.
• PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD: Put the phone away and eliminate distractions to ensure your eyes—and your focus—stay on the path ahead.
• OBEY SPEED LIMITS: Follow posted signs strictly, as lower speeds are essential for reacting to unpredictable movements in residential areas.
• SHARE THE ROAD RESPONSIBLY: Give cyclists at least three feet of space when passing and always double-check your blind spots.
• BE AWARE OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION: Slow down in work zones and stay alert for flaggers, as traffic patterns can change daily during the summer.
• TALK TO TEEN DRIVERS: Discuss the specific risks of summer driving with your teens, emphasizing the importance of seatbelts and limiting passengers.
• IT’S ANONYMOUS: NCIS tip line, reward up to $1,000 for information leading to felony arrest, recovery of drugs or stolen property.
